190 Assessment of Weaning Management on Growth Performance and Health in Southeastern Beef Calves

چکیده

Abstract The beef calf weaning period is a time of transition in the cow-calf production cycle and can be one most stressful stages life calf. This have major impact on both short- long-term health, growth performance economic returns. There are several different management strategies cattle producers use this period. objective study was to assess effects practices health before backgrounding. A two-year conducted using 427 steer calves (216 year 1, average BW 297 kg; 213 2, 291 kg) from three Auburn University research farms were randomly assigned based weight method groups for 14-day observation period: fenceline, nose-flap, or abrupt weaning. On day 0, all group traveled 3 hours central location. Calves fenceline nose-flap same location 14 study. weighed 24 following any travel event. Blood samples also collected determine haptoglobin concentrations surrounding travels events blood titers vaccinations. In years study, weaned had greatest daily gain at 1.08 kg/d (P < 0.0001) abruptly least gain, losing 0.15 during 14-d Year steers significantly greater across treatments than with 1 gaining 7.72 kg more 2 calves. Over gained =0.0008) Year, (0.084mg/mL; P noseflap (0.023mg/mL; 0.020mg/mL). data demonstrates how may influence into post-weaning

Early weaning beef calves.

Early weaning is a management practice that reduces grazing pressure on pastures by decreasing the nutrient requirements of cows. Calves that are weaned early are relatively efficient at converting feed to gain, and can weigh as much, or more than, calves allowed to remain with their dams until a conventional weaning age is reached. Balanced diets with excellent physical, chemical, and palatabi...

Relation of growth hormone response to growth hormone-releasing hormone before weaning and postweaning growth performance in beef calves.

Previously, GH response to GHRH challenge at weaning has been shown to be indicative of ADG during a standard postweaning growth performance test in Angus cattle. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that GH response to GHRH before weaning would predict postweaning ADG. Bulls with the highest and lowest GH responses to GHRH over a 3-yr period, relative to their contemporaries, were used as s...

The effect of early weaning on feedlot performance and measures of stress in beef calves.

Forty crossbred steers (Brahman x English) were categorized into two groups: 1) early weaned (EW; n = 20); and 2) normal weaned (NW; n = 20). Calves were 89 and 300 d of age at the time of EW and NW, respectively; SEM = 4.4. Early-weaned calves were kept on-site (University of Florida, Ona), provided supplement (1% of BW), and grazed on annual and perennial pastures until NW. At the time of nor...

The effects of weaning beef calves in two stages on their behavior and growth rate.

Four trials were conducted to explore possible advantages of weaning beef calves in two stages compared with the traditional method of weaning by abrupt separation. In the two-stage treatment, calves were prevented from nursing their dam for a period (Stage 1) before their separation (Stage 2). Control calves nursed from their dams until they were separated. Calf weights and behavior were recor...

Performance of Beef Calves

These results support the earlier findings by Dr. Bill Kunkle and his research involving limitcreep supplements based on cottonseed meal and salt mixtures. Calf performance responses, as measured by the added gain realized by creep supplementation, are highly variable and cannot always be described by amounts of creep feed consumed. This variability has large and direct impacts on the cost effe...
